Glass Birds Staircase Installation
A moment of delicacy designed to bring visual richness to a contemporary hallway.
The Brief

We were commissioned to create a statement lighting installation for a three-storey entrance hall within a private residential development in Hertfordshire. Designed around the scheme’s main focal point, a floating cantilevered staircase, the piece had to elevate the space while complementing the scale and simplicity of the architecture.

The Spec
  • 180 hand sculpted, crackled glass birds
  • Mirror polished suspension details and ceiling fixtures
  • 0.2mm stainless steel suspension wires
  • 2700K adjustable, high output spotlights
The Design

Beginning with our signature On the Wing concept, we reinterpreted the graceful movement of birds in flight into a suspended chandelier, creating a moment of tactile contrast within the contemporary interior.

Designed to depict both motion and symmetry, the installation cascades through the open volume of the staircase. Elegantly fluid yet precisely structured, it comprises 180 wing-like forms that come together to produce rhythm, hierarchy and visual drama.

Each piece is hand-formed by our specialist glassblower while still molten, before being briefly dipped into water to achieve a delicate crackled surface. This intricate texture is purposefully used to capture the light and introduce a subtle sense of dynamism to the installation.

The glass elements are suspended from ultra-fine stainless-steel cables and individually fixed to the pitched ceiling canopy above. Their cyclical composition evokes the continuous flow of birds in flight, animating the triple-height void and creating the illusion of that they are rising and falling through the staircase.
To enhance the chandelier, directional spotlights are carefully positioned around the installation, amplifying the way light interacts with the glass and adding further depth and character.
